Marking a website page with one of the icons above indicates that the page passes Level A, AA or AAA of WCAG 1.0 (W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0). WCAG 1.0 prescribes how Internet content must be prepared for it to become accessible to everyone. The criteria for this are prioritised in three categories, A, AA and AAA, with the final category denoting the fulfilment of every guideline. While some guidelines can be checked automatically, others build on subjective evaluation, such as a text being clear and easy to understand. Webmasters are in charge of auditing their own websites; when they consider that a website fulfils certain guidelines they may display an icon on it, such as WAI-AA, certifying that this category's guidelines have been achieved on the page in question. However, this certification applies only to the respective page and not to the entire website, unless this is specifically stated. W3C/WAI bears no responsibility for how others use the icons, so that usage merely indicates, but does not guarantee, that the particular website fulfils specific accessibility standards.
