Continues as Minister for Foreign Affairs

Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson, Minister for Foreign Affairs - mynd

Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson is Minister for Foreign Affairs in the government of the Independence Party, Left Green Movement and the Progressive Party, which took office yesterday and is headed by Ms. Katrín Jakobsdóttir of the Left Green Movement.

“I am pleased to be able to implement the foreign policy of the new government, emphasizing free-trade, the EEA-agreement and guarding Iceland’s interest in relation to Brexit; all in good cooperation with our neighbours. Arctic issues are a priority and there is a clear emphasis on climate and gender equality. I also welcome the opportunity to follow-up on a recent, comprehensive report on how the Ministry’s human and financial resources can more effectively execute government foreign policy,” said the Minister.

Gudlaugur Thor served as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the outgoing government of Bjarni Benediktsson, which took power 11 January this year. Previous to that he was Minister of Health and Social Security 2007-2009. He has been a member of Althingi, the parliament, since 2003.
