Chemicals

It is important to ensure that use of chemicals and chemical products does not threaten human or animal health or the environment, and that consumers receive satisfactory information on chemicals and substances. It is urgent to prevent or restrict as far as possible release of chemicals which are environmental and health hazards, as well as illegal marketing of substances.

Icelandic legislation on chemicals is based on Nordic and European Union legislation on chemicals and chemical substances, as the latter applies in Iceland as part of the Agreement on a European Economic Area. It covers, for instance, the manufacture, marketing and export of chemicals, registration of substances, licensing, labelling, usage, restrictions and prohibitions.

The Environment Agency supervises the implementation of this legislation and its general enforcement.
