Iceland's FM and US President discuss geothermal energy

During the NATO summit held in Strasbourg-Kehl during the weekend Mr. Össur Skarphéðinsson the Foreign Minister of Iceland held talks with Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States particularly on increased cooperation between the two countries in the field of utilization of geothermal energy.

President Obama expressed great interest in such cooperation and said that he knew personally about Iceland’s leadership in that field. President Obama said that his Government is committed to increasing the development of the utilization of renewable energy resources in the effort to further curb emissons of greenhouse gases and to create more environmentally friendly jobs.

Before the end of the NATO summit President Obama had designated one of his chief advisors as a special contact for Iceland in the White House in this particular field.
