Icelandic government contributes aid to Pakistan

At a cabinet meeting this morning the Minister for Foreign Affairs informed that ISK 23 million will be contributed to emergency aid in areas impacted by the monsoon floods in Pakistan. The floods, the worst in more than 80 years, have affected millions of Pakistanis nationwide. An estimated 1,300 people have lost their lives, with the death toll expected to rise as millions of people are at risk from deadly disease. The floods have affected an estimated 14 million people, of which 6 million are in need for food assistance.

ISK 15 million ($120,000 US) will be channelled through the World Food Programme and ISK 8 million will be allocated to emergency assistance provided by NGOs.
