Iceland Contributes Humanitarian Assistance to Japan

The Government of Iceland will contribute ISK 10 million to humanitarian assistance in Japan in response to the emergency situation caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Following a cabinet meeting on Friday 18 March, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Össur Skarphéðinsson, announced that the contribution will be channeled through the Icelandic Red Cross to support the relief efforts of the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Pending information about additional relief needs and requirements, the Icelandic authorities will monitor the situation with further assistance in mind, including the possibility to contribute to a consolidated offer from European countries, to be coordinated by the  European Commission Humanitarion Aid Department.
