Sturla Sigurjonsson new Permanent Secretary of State

The Minister for Foreign Affairs has appointed Ambassador Sturla Sigurjonsson as Permanent Secretary of State from 1 September 2017. Ambassador Stefan Haukur Johannesson, who was Permanent Secretary from 2014, will lead ongoing Brexit related assignments until he resumes duties abroad.

Sturla Sigurjonsson has served in the foreign service for 30 years and was Ambassador of Iceland in Canada until his appointment as Permanent Secretary of State. Prior to that Sturla was Ambassador of Iceland to Denmark and India and the Prime Minister‘s Foreign Policy Adviser. He has had various other responsibilites in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, e.g. as Director General of International and Security Affairs and the Defence Department.
