Nordic Climate Action day in Washington DC

On Wednesday the Nordic Embassies in Washington DC joined forces for a Climate Action day.

The day started with a Twitter Town Hall in cooperation with the UN Foundation where the Nordic Ambassadors for one hour answered questions on climate and the Nordic approaches to climate change.

In the afternoon the Nordic Embassies hosted a climate event on Capitol Hill together with C2ES titled “Road to Carbon Neutrality: the Nordic Example”. In addition to remarks given by the Ambassadors, Congressman Paul Tonko, Chair of the House Environment & Climate Change Subcommittee gave remarks on plans US lawmakers are pushing to decarbonize the economy and thanked the Nordic countries for inspiring the global community.

The Nordics have all set ambitious timelines on making their economies carbon neutral and were among the first in setting carbon taxes and a functioning emission market. Not only are the Nordics politically committed to doing their share in reducing emissions and reaching international climate targets, they see transition to carbon neutrality as an enormous opportunity for the clean industries and technologies of the future.

Ambassador Bergdís Ellertsdóttir focused in her remarks on the importance of sustainable land use and combating land degradation. "We see afforestation, revegetation and wetland reclamation as key actions in our pledge for carbon neutrality and we would like to see more focus on the land sector worldwide" stressed Ambassador Ellertsdottir.
