Prime Minister meets with President of Finland

President of Finland, Prime Minister of Iceland and their wives

The Prime Minister had a meeting on 29 May with the President of Finland, Mr. Sauli Niinistö, during the Presidents offical visit to Iceland which started on the 28 May. The meeting was held in the Government‘s Reception House at Tjarnargata, Reykjavik.

The Prime Minister and President discussed economic situation in Iceland and Finland, and international economic issues. The President of Finland has a vast experience in this area, as a former Minister of Finance in Finland during the aftermath of the economic crisis there at the end of the 1990‘s.

Prime Minister of Iceland and President of FinlandThe Prime Minister and President also discussed cooperation between Iceland and Finland on various issues and the Prime Minister introduced the increased emphasis that his government will place on cooperation with nordic partners and the focus that will be placed on Iceland taking a leading role in the Arctic. The opening of sea routes and importance of projects and opportunities in that area, are at the forefront in that aspect.

The Prime Minister and his wife invited the President of Finland and his wife to lunch at Thingvellir on Wednesday, which was the final day of the official visit.
