Health and hygiene

Health and hygiene are factors inherent in practically all aspects of our daily lives, such as the effects on our health of the housing we dwell in, general hygiene, indoor air quality and sound level, and the environment of the services we enjoy, for instance, public baths and swimming pools. This includes ensuring that pets do not cause unnecessary noise or other disturbance, or unhealthy and unhygienic conditions.

The authorities have various measures to ensure optimal public health and hygiene. The operation of ten regional Health Inspectorates, for instance, is mandatory in Iceland. Comprehensive legislation on health and hygiene and pollution prevention is intended to ensure various different aspects of public health.

The Environment Agency is responsible for enforcement of legislation on health and hygiene.
