Ragnar Kjartansson: Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum | 2 - 5 July 2021

“So many of these songs are actually made to charm and compliment women, but when you hear them all together you realize the structure of society.” — Ragnar Kjartansson, The New York Times

For a limited time only, the Guggenheim Museum will showcase Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy, a work by Ragnar Kjartansson. This showcase will feature women and non-binary singer-guitarists stationed throughout the rotunda playing popular songs of love and romance simultaneously to create a live mash-up. Each musician must personally confront the emotional and physical burden of its content. Yet she also joins in a collective ritual that imagines new possibilities for endurance, reclamation, and even joy.

Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy creates an atmospheric space where the contradictions of individuality and similarity, oppression and liberation, rhythm and chaos are able to coexist together within a collaborative environment of mutual support.

Visitors will need to reserve a timed ticket online in order to secure their place for this event. There is a limited capacity and masks are mandatory for entry.
