GRO GTP training in Shanxi Province

Successful two short courses on productive use of geothermal energy took place in November in Shanxi. The training was organized cooperatively by GRÓ GTP and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), which took on the role of implementing entity on the Chinese side.  It consists of two consecutive short courses.  The former was focused on exploration, evaluation and management of geothermal resources, and held during November 18-23, while the latter was devoted to utilization of geothermal resources during November 25-27.  The courses were held in Taiyuan, the captial of Shanxi Province, and were attended by 80 participants from institutions contributing to geothermal development in Shanxi.  Instruction was in the hands of Icelandic experts who travel to site, with additional major contributions from remote lecturers.  These include Chinese GRÓ GTP alumni working for various institutions and companies in China, Professors of China University of Geosciences, and GRÓ GTP and ÍSOR staff.  Chinese lecturers lecture in Chinese, while lectures in English are translated simultaneously to Chinese.

This training exemplifies ideal cooperation between China and Iceland where experts from both countries share their significant expertise, accumulated through years of academic studies, research, and experience working with geothermal resources in the two countries.  These are different in many ways, but also share common attributes.  China‘s geothermal resources are characteristically sedimentary in nature, while Iceland‘s are characteristically volcanic.  Yet, both contain bountiful energy-rich water with the precious potential to transform human lives for the better.  This is well manifested in the extensive space heating that is a common feature of geothermal utilization in both countries and which has elevated the standards of living for so many people.
