An International conference on #metoo will start tomorrow

The Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, opens an international conference on #metoo, starting at 14.30 tomorrow in Harpa and concluding on September 19th.  Tomorrow programme includes keynote speakers and debates with participation of the Nordic Ministers of gender equality.

At tomorrow’s conference, UN WOMEN will launch a new report, entitled What will it take? Promoting Cultural Change to End Sexual Harassment. The report outlines formal and informal responses to #metoo. The results of a large study on sexual harassment, gender-based harassment and violence on the Icelandic labour market, initiated by the Minister for Social Affairs, Ásmundur Einar Daðason, will also be presented. Finally, Angela Davis, professor and author, will give the keynote address on the impact of the #metoo movement.

Over 800 people have registered for the conference, making it one of the biggest conferences to be held about #metoo. Over 80 speakers will attend the conference, including activists, politicians and experts such as Roxane Gay, Liz Kelly, Marai Larasi and Cynthia Enloe.

The conference is part of Iceland’s presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers and is organized in collaboration with RIKK – Institute for Gender, Equality and Difference at the University of Iceland. This autumn, two years will have passed since the #metoo movement started and women around the world spoke out about sexual violence and gender-based and sexual harassment.
