Regulation on quarantine, isolation and testing for COVID-19 at the border

On 15 June a new and amended regulations regarding on quarantine, isolation, testing for COVID-19 will take effect. The changes are in line with the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist. 

Regarding testing at the border from 15 June:

  • Anyone entering Iceland who has stayed in areas with high risk of infection within 14 days prior to arrival must either self-quarantine for fourteen days or, if they meet conditions for testing, choose to be tested for COVID-19 at the border. 

  • Who is exempt from quarantine and testing on arrival?

  • Transit passengers who do not enter Iceland 

  • Children born in 2005 or later

  • Holders of a certificate of prior COVID-19 infection from the Icelandic health authorities 

  • Testing at the border is optional but passengers who chose not to be tested must undergo a two-week quarantine.

  • Those who receive negative test results from COVID-19 are exempt from the two-week quarantine requirement.

  • Testing is free of charge from the 15 June 2020 until 30 June 2020. 

  • From 1 July 2020 testing will cost 15.000 ISK. 

  • Those who have travelled to Iceland before testing efforts at the border began and are still in quarantine on 15 June 2020 can request to be tested a health centre and those who test negative can leave quarantine. A standard fee is charged for each test.

  • All samples and tests will be destroyed after analysis and they will only be used for diagnosis of COVID-19

Testing at Health Centres (not the boarder)

  • If you are showing symptoms of the COVID-19 disease, like they are defined by the Directorate of Health in Iceland, is entitled to a test at a health centre without charges. 

  • A person who requests a test at a health centre without showing symptoms of COVID-19, like they are defined by the Directorate of Health in Iceland, will have to pay for the test at the health centre. From the 1 July 2020 the charges will be 11.000 ISK plus appointment charges.
