Icelandic salmon can now be imported to China

The first shipment of Icelandic salmon has already been shipped and is en route to the Chinese market. Agreement between Iceland and China on access for Icelandic farmed fish products to the Chinese market came into effect on 20 September following necessary technical preparations by Icelandic and Chinese veterinary experts. The Agreement was signed by Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson and Chinese Minister of Customs, Ni Yuefeng in Iceland last May. The agreement allows for imports to China of all Icelandic farmed fish species.

Fish farming in Iceland has experienced steady growth in recent years. Total production by Icelandic fish farming companies by volume has quadrupled over the last decade. Total export value of Icelandic farmed fish products in 2018 amounted to 13.1 billion ISK.
