Iceland's Ambassador to the UK, Mr. Sverrir Haukur Gunnlaugsson, had a meeting this afternoon, Wednesday 8 October, at 10 Downing Street with a number of high officials from the UK Prime Minister's office and the UK Exchequer. The meeting was held at the request of the Icelandic authorities, following statements by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling this morning. The meeting discussed consultations between the two countries on the financial crisis, its impact on the Icelandic financial system and the situation of Icelandic banks. Ambassador Gunnlaugsson informed the meeting on the contents of a statement by the Government on the IceSave accounts owned by Landsbanki. It has been decided that formal talks between the two governments will begin on further consultations and necessary measures.
