The Lithuanian Parliament, Seimas, agreed today on a parliamentary resolution welcoming and supporting Iceland’s decision to apply for accession to the European Union and inviting other EU member states to support the application. The resolution recalls with appreciation that Iceland was the first state to recognize Lithuania’s independence and expresses hope that formal negotiations could start as early as beginning of 2010.

The resolution also declares a willingness to share Lithuania’s experience of the EU accession negotiations with Iceland.

Lithuania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vygaudas Usackas, will visit Iceland this Saturday to present the Resolution and meet with Ossur Skarphedinsson, Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Arni Thor Sigurdsson, Chairman of the Standing Committee of Foreing Affaris of the Parliament of Iceland.
