Today Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson met with high-ranking officials of the Arab League in Cairo to discuss the situation in Palestine.

Later today the foreign minister will travel to Gaza and on Thursday the minister will be in Jordan where he will meet with Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. From Jordan, Minister Skarphéðinsson will travel to Ramallah, seat of the Palestinian Authority, where he will meet with its leaders.

The minister will meet with the Palestinans and their neighbouring countries to discuss Palestine‘s status, as the Palestinian Authority has announced its intention to turn to the United Nations in the Fall in an effort to attain recognition of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.

„The aim of this visit is to experience, at first hand, the complex situation at present, not least the formation of a new Palestinian government, and to discuss frankly how friendly nations can support the Palestinians in their struggle for independence,“ said Foreign Minister Skarphéðinsson.
