  • Bill of legislation submitted to the Althingi amending legislation on the Icelandic Students’ Loan Fund to eliminate the requirement of guarantors.
  • New rules on compensation to committees, hospitality and travel expenses approved by the government.
    New Central Bank executive appointed.
  • Balance sheets of the new banks finalised and the banks recapitalised.
  • Completion of the refinancing and restructuring of savings banks which have requested an initial capital contribution from the state.
  • Parliamentary resolution on Iceland’s application for EU membership submitted to the Althingi.
  • Forum established for consultation between the government, municipalities, agricultural sector and social partners.
  • Work begun on formulating an industrial strategy in collaboration with the social partners and academic community. Among its objectives is to have Iceland ranked among the top ten most competitive countries of the world by 2020. Discussions begun with pension funds and domestic investors on their participation, together with government, in strengthening business and industry.
  • Proposals for a new social insurance system submitted to the government.
  • New rules on loans approved by the Icelandic Students’ Loan Fund.
  • Work begun on formulating a national energy strategy. Such a strategy should be aimed, for instance, at having renewable energy sources eventually replace imported energy.
  • A revenue review committee established to draft proposals on extending and reinforcing local government revenue sources.
  • A Natural Protection Plan to 2013 submitted to the Althingi.
  • An advisory group of vessel operators and fishermen appointed to advise on fisheries and utilisation of marine resources and the condition of the marine biosphere.
  • Work begun on creating an action plan for all regions aimed at improving industry and life quality in the long term.
  • A campaign launched to advertise and boost services to resolve payment difficulties facing highly indebted households.
  • Work begun on drafting a long-term cultural strategy in consultation with artists.
  • The Directorate of Labour and New Business Venture Fund provided with increased resources to respond to unemployment.
  • A bill of legislation improving the environment for start-ups and innovative enterprises submitted to the Althingi.
  • Initiative launched to increase summer employment and offer new employment options for young people.
  • Cost-cutting drive launched in public administration, involving employees, management and users of services.
  • Work begun on compiling a survey of the status and development of key indicators on economic and social issues together with future options.
  • The positions of heads of the state banks advertised for application.
