The Prime Minister and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the Prime Minister of Denmark met in Copenhagen today

The Prime Ministers discussed the accession negotiations between Iceland and the European Union, as Denmark is the upcoming presidency for the first half of 2012. A special provision in the coalition agreement for the Danish Government, states that it will support actively the accession of Iceland to the European Union.

The Prime Ministers specifically discussed the process of the negotiations in the next months, as it is foreseen that in addition to the negotiating chapters that will be opened in 2011, the rest can be opened in 2012, hopefully within the time of the Danish presidency.   

The Prime Ministers discussed economic issues, including the recent developements and actions undertaken by leaders in the European Union and eurozone. The Prime Ministers also discussed the economic situation in  Iceland.

The Prime Minister of Iceland invited the Danish Prime Minister to make an official visit to Iceland next year.
