The Prime Minister on an official visit to China

The Prime Minister of Iceland, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, and her wife, Jónína Leósdóttir, will be on an official visit to China on 15-18 April. The Prime Minister was invited by former Premier of China, Wen Jiabao, in his official visit to Iceland in April last year. The Prime Minister of Iceland will have discussions with the new Premier, Li Keqiang, and a meeting with the President of China, Xi Jinping. She will also meet with former Premier Wen Jiabao.

During the visit, Iceland and China will sign a free trade agreement, which has been concluded between the countries after six years of negotiations. The Prime Minister and Premier Wen Jiabao agreed during his visit to Iceland in 2012 to put increased efffort into finalising the agreement, so as to have it finalised within a year. The Free Trade Agreement will be signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland and the Minister of Commerce in China. A business conference will also be opened by the Prime Minister, on 16 April, in Beijing. The focus of the business conference will be on the opportunities opened by the Free Trade Agreement and be a venue where Icelandic and Chinese representatives and business community will attend.
