International Investment Agreements
Regional Agreements
European Economic Area
Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA Agreement of 1992, which entered into force on 1 January 1994, covers the free movement of capital and investments. The Contracting Parties comprise the 27 EU Member States and three EFTA States Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
EFTA Free Trade Agreements
Iceland is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and as such is party to numerous mulitlateral Free Trade Agreements which contain stipulations on investments. The Contracting Parties include:
Europe
Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. Pending: Turkey
Africa - Middle East
Member States of the Co-operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), which comprises the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait
Americas
Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru. Pending: Ecuador
Asia - Pacific
Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore and South-Korea. Pending: Indonesia
International Agreements
Iceland is a party to the following investment related international agreements (selection):
- Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA)
- International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)
- UNCITRAL Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (New York, 1958 - the "New York Convention").
- World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs) of 1994.
- Energy Charter Treaty of 1994
